Risks - Hospitalization
Gastric bypass surgery has many risks involved, but there are some long-term safety concerns as well that are years down the line.
Researchers say gastric bypass increased risk of serious health problems for several years. Almost 20% of California patients had
to return to the hospital in the first year due to complications, whereas only 8% had been hospitalized before they underwent
gastric bypass surgery. During the second and third years, hospitalization rates dropped slightly to 15%. These upward trends
in hospitalization amounted to about $25,000 in costs, which is roughly half of what it costs to undergo the surgery. All
together some patients may near the $100,000 mark when the examinations, gastric bypass surgery, and post-surgery hospitalization
costs are tallied together.
